How do they determine who gets the house in a divorce proceedings?

That's decided by whomever has custody of the children, whatever is dictated by the prenuptial agreement, & other miscellaneous cirstances. Sometimes when there are no children to consider, the house may be sold & the proceeds then divided, unless a prenuptial contract says different. ~:|>
