Why isn't my garden growing??

I planted some vincas, heather and liriope around the base of some oak trees in my backyard. I planted one on a saturday and the next one on that sunday but only one of them is flourishing. Any ideas why? I am pretty sure the shade level is the same, they both get some filtered light during the day and i water them the same.
