Plastic coupling is worn out on end of shifter cable?

I have an automatic 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 5.7l. The plastic coupling on worn out on the end of the shifter cable has worn out. What i need to know is if the plastic coupling is removable or do i have to completely replace the entire shifter cable? (which is a last resort) Also if it is removable please explain cuz i couldnt figure it.
